On Tuesday, Oct. 28, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced a new state food assistance program that will bridge the gap during the pause in federal SNAP benefits resulting from the federal government shutdown.

The Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance, or VENA, will begin distributing benefits on Monday, Nov. 3. Anyone who received SNAP benefits in October will receive VENA funds on their existing EBT cards in November.  However, the benefits will be distributed weekly rather than monthly.

The program will roll out incrementally, with a third of SNAP beneficiaries receiving funding Nov. 3, another third on Nov. 5, and the last third on Nov. 7. The program, which will run while state surplus funds last, will cost $37.5 million per week.

Meanwhile, a statement from the Virginia Department of Social Services encourages Virginians concerned about the interruptions to SNAP caused by the government shutdown to contact Senators Mark Warner at (202) 224-2023 and Tim Kaine at (202) 224-4024.

At Senior Services, we stand with older adults and advocate year-round with local, state, and federal leaders to protect essential programs and support for our community.

This is a difficult time for many families, but seniors are especially vulnerable to the effects of malnutrition and food insecurity. We also understand that spending more on food means spending less on other necessities.
