Homeless Older Adults Program

The number of older adults experiencing homelessness is increasing in our community and across the nation. These older adults are more likely to have health problems and poor nutrition. They typically have no access to primary care or family support.

The Homeless Older Adults Program offers outreach and supportive services to older adults experiencing homelessness.

Supportive Services

Our staff can assist with:

• Guidance on housing options
• Landlord mediation
• Personal identification
• Transportation coordination
• Benefits

Community Outreach

Our outreach specialist provides:

• Street outreach to older adults experiencing homelessness
• Individualized client support to address barriers, increase income, secure social services, and obtain permanent housing
• Short-term case management after a person is housed

Advocacy

Senior Services’ Homeless Older Adults program creates and informs initiatives that increase access to services and support for older adults experiencing homelessness. We follow a Housing First approach, in which a person’s access to permanent housing does not depend on their participation in services.

In our leadership role as advocates for the equitable treatment of older adults, Senior Services is chair of the regional Singles Service Coordination Committee, chair of the Coalition for Homeless Elders, and a member of the Southeastern Virginia Homeless Coalition.

How to Help

Older adults moving into permanent housing can be overwhelmed by start-up expenses. Help a formerly homeless older adult make a successful transition by donating a Welcome Home Basket, complete with all the essentials for their new home. This is a great community service project for an office, civic league, church, classroom, or other group interested in giving back.
