(Hampton Roads, Va., May 8, 2013) – Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia joins other Area Agencies on Aging nationwide in the annual recognition of “Older Americans Month.” Since 1963, The U.S. Administration on Aging has designated May as a special time to honor and recognize this nation’s senior citizens. This year’s theme, “Unleash the Power of Age” recognizes seniors who make a difference in our community by contributing their skills and knowledge through civic, community and social engagement.
In acknowledgement of the national recognition, and as a special tribute to Virginia’s 60+ older adult community Governor Bob McDonnell has also proclaimed May as “Older Virginians Month.”
John N. Skirven, Senior Services CEO says that, “seniors are a powerful force in our region. They include not only the most revered among our elected and business leaders, but also our neighborhood and faith champions who are among our elders. What makes them effective is the wisdom that tempers their power.” During May, let’s all say thank you to our South Hampton Roads' elders who are making a difference by their contributions through their leadership in our homes, congregations, businesses and communities.
