Hampton Roads, Va. (July 9, 2013) – The Rotary Club of Norfolk and the Rotary Club of Cape Henry in Virginia Beach have awarded Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia $3,000 in grants ($1,500 each) to help fund the agency's 2013 I-Ride Mini-Van Match Program. Both Hampton Roads’ clubs annually provide support to local community nonprofits through their grant programs.
In 2012, Senior Services I-Ride program provided more than 42,000 rides throughout Hampton Roads. At least 2,800 of those rides were for Norfolk residents, and over 3,800 rides to qualified seniors and disabled individuals in Virginia Beach. The fare is $1, which keeps the rides affordable for low-income citizens. Senior Services is required to pay a 20 percent match as part of the 2013 Section 5310 federal transportation grant program. That match is about $10,000 per vehicle.
The gifts from the two Rotary Clubs will assist Senior Services in meeting the match requirement. Once the full match is met through other funding sources Senior Services will be able to add one new vehicle to their transportation fleet in the respective fiscal year.
