NORFOLK, Va. – (May 1, 2013) – A lively gathering of senior adults came out in force at Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday, April 27, to participate in “Senior Fitness” Day, a first-time health and wellness event hosted by Amerigroup and Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia.
Seniors from all over Hampton Roads, bejeweled in Hawaiian leis, with colors designating competing teams, could be found practicing tai chi, planting window herb gardens, learning how to take their own blood pressure and prevent falls, and enjoying a host of other activities geared to help them take charge of their health and wellness.
More than 30 volunteers from Amerigroup, a wholly-owned subsidiary of WellPoint, Inc., worked the event, as part of a nationwide community service day presented by WellPoint. The initiative is one of the ways in which WellPoint enables and encourages its employees to give back to their communities. This is the first time that Amerigroup has participated in the nationwide effort since becoming part of the WellPoint family. It is not, however, the first time that Amerigroup volunteers have worked with Senior Services. According to Sue Stanley, corporate volunteer coordinator for Senior Services, “Amerigroup has become a vital part of Senior Services’ volunteer team. Since affiliating with the agency in 2010, the company’s 2 employees have volunteered their time to paint seniors’ apartments, registered hundreds of seniors for Farmers’ Market coupons, and hosted carnivals and holiday parties at Senior Services’ managed senior centers.” In recognition of those efforts, Amerigroup volunteers were the recipients of Senior Services’ “Crystal Award,” presented at the agency’s 2013 Annual Meeting this past January. “Amerigroup is proud to support Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia in its efforts to improve the lives of seniors and their families,” said Tina Gill, Amerigroup Foundation executive director. “Volunteerism is something we hold near to our hearts and giving back to Hampton Roads allows us to put our passion and care into action.”
