Local Taxi Services Offering Free Rides to the Polls Election Day
Registered voters 60 and older in Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach and Norfolk can get free rides to the polls Election Day and a free ride home.

Getting to the polls can be a challenge for many, but local taxi companies have footed the bill to assist people in need of a ride to voting locations for years.

Registered voters 60 and older in Newport News, Hampton, Virginia Beach and Norfolk can get free rides to the polls Election Day and a free ride home.

Randi Chew, a spokeswoman for the Peninsula Agency on Aging, said the service has helped keep seniors civically engaged and has made sure their voices are heard.

The Peninsula Agency on Aging facilitates rides for people in Newport News and Hampton — to request a ride, call 757-873-0541.

If you’re voting in Norfolk or Virginia Beach, call Senior Services of Southeast Virginia at 757-963-9218.

People requesting the service need to provide a phone number, pickup address, voting location and a pickup time. If lots of other people are requesting rides to vote, the schedule may shuffle. People may also be asked to share cabs with other voters.

The deadline to request a ride is noon on Monday.

The local taxi companies participating are Coastal Ride, Yellow Cab, Black and White Cabs of Virginia Beach, and Norfolk Checker Taxi.

Frank Azzalina, director of business development for Hampton Roads Transportation Inc., said the companies cover the cost of the rides.

Taxi drivers pay companies to drive their cabs and keep the fares from riders. After Election Day, the companies will pay back the taxi drivers for fares they would have earned for driving voters.

Azzalina said the companies have offered and paid for the free rides for about eight years.
