Hampton Roads, Va. (May 23, 2017) – Seniors are aging out loud and celebrating Older Americans Month on Friday, May 26, with an open house at the Chesapeake Avenue UMC wellness center. From 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at 1200 Chesapeake Ave. in Chesapeake, Virginia, area seniors will share how participating in Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia (SSSEVA) wellness center activities has positively impacted their lives. Special guests Mayor Alan P. Krasnoff and Delegate Clifton Hayes are scheduled to join in the festivities.
“An abundance of exhilarating activities makes Senior Services’ wellness centers an enjoyable place for seniors age 60 and older to spend their day,” Shonya Anderson, SSSEVA’s wellness administrative supervisor, shared amidst preparing for the open house. “These facilities offer a holistic approach that meet the mind, body, and spiritual needs of participants.” The centers regularly help senior residents demonstrate this year’s Older Americans Month theme of “Aging Out Loud” in their communities.
Older Americans Month, led by the Administration for Community Living, has been observed annually since 1963. It is a time to learn about, support, and recognize our nation’s older citizens. This year’s theme emphasizes the way older adults are living their lives with boldness, confidence, and passion while serving as an inspiration to people of all ages.
During the open house, jewelry and crafts created by the seniors will be on display, and participants will have a chance to enjoy Wii games, Bingo, dominoes, card games, and other activities, including music from pianist Gwen Smith.
