Norfolk, Va. (February 13, 2017) – Michael Aschkenas, of Virginia Beach, received the Crystal Award from Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia during the agency’s 45th annual meeting on Jan. 26 at the Marriott Chesapeake. The award, presented by Senior Services CEO John Skirven, is given each year to a person or group who through their volunteerism has affected positive change in the lives of seniors or adults with disabilities. Aschkenas was recognized for his steadfastly dedicated and inspirational leadership.

“Mike has been a huge contribution to this organization,” Skirven said of Aschkenas. “He is constantly challenging the organization and us as individuals to do more, to do better, and he is always there.”

Aschkenas has served on Senior Services’ board of directors for the past eight years and as the board’s first vice president for the past six years. He is currently the chair of its strategic planning committee. The Old Dominion University graduate retired 10 years ago from being a Civil Service program analyst and has since been an active volunteer with Senior Services, the Virginia Beach Commission on Aging, Virginia Beach Project Lifesaver, and Sentara Senior Services.

“The opportunity to serve seniors when you become a senior is an honor because you can see the difference you make in people’s lives,” Aschkenas said. “I am very humbled.”
