Understanding What This Enrollment Period Means

What is the difference between Medicare Annual Open Enrollment and your initial enrollment period when you first get Medicare?

 Medicare Annual Open Enrollment – is October 15th through December 7th each calendar year.

 During this time frame Medicare Beneficiaries can:

  • Change from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage Plan – If you have original Medicare and a Part D plan, you can drop the part D get a Medicare Advantage plan that includes your Part D.

 

  • Change from a Medicare Advantage Plan back to Original Medicare and a Part D plan.

 

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage Plan to another Medicare Advantage Plan.

 

  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn't offer drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage plan that offers drug coverage.

 

  • Switch from a Medicare Advantage Plan that offers drug coverage to a Medicare Advantage Plan that doesn't offer drug coverage.

 

  • Join a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

 

  • Switch from one Medicare drug plan to another Medicare Prescription drug plan.

 

  • Drop your Medicare prescription drug coverage completely.

 

Medicare initial enrollment period: New to Medicare, this revolves around your 65th birthday,

NOT the Medicare Annual Open Enrollment period unless your birthday happens to fall between October 15- Dec 7.

 

  • Sign up for a Medicare Advantage Plan and/or a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan.

 

(?) During the 7-month period that:

  • Starts 3 months before the month you turn 65
  • Includes the month you turn 65
  • Ends 3 months after the month you turn 65
