Question: I am a caretaker for my 89 year old mother, and am interested to know is whether or not Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels and the weekday meals served at your senior center wellness and nutrition sites are suitable for older people diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes?
Yes! All of the meals that we provide for our customers meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans which promote a healthy diet that reduces the risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes. They have limited calories from added sugars and saturated fats, and reduced sodium intake, which is consistent with a heart healthy, diabetic diet. With a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat milk, the meals provide one-third of the dietary reference intakes; meaning they meet a third of your nutritional needs for the day.
