Are Meals on Wheels and Senior Center Meals suitable for elderly people suffering from heart disease or diabetes?

Question: I am a caretaker for my 89 year old mother, and am interested to know is whether or not Senior Services’ Meals on Wheels and the weekday meals served at  your senior center wellness and nutrition sites are suitable for older people diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes?

Yes!  All of the meals that we provide for our customers meet the Dietary Guidelines for Americans which promote a healthy diet that reduces the risk for chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes.  They have limited calories from added sugars and saturated fats, and reduced sodium intake, which is consistent with a heart healthy, diabetic diet.   With a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, lean protein and low-fat milk, the meals provide one-third of the dietary reference intakes; meaning they meet a third of your nutritional needs for the day.

If you are a senior or a caregiver of a senior and interested in learning more about our Meals on Wheels (home-delivered meals) program or about our senior center wellness and nutrition sites, click on one of the following links: Meals on Wheels or Wellness and Nutrition Sites or call 757-461-9481 and ask to speak to a Resource Specialist.
