Respite Care for Family Caregivers
Respite Care for Family Caregivers
What options are available in South Hampton Roads?

Question: I am a family caregiver seeking respite assistance for a few hours a week. Who can I turn to?

Response: Senior Services provides respite care options that can offer family caregivers a hand with daily activities such as bathing and light housework as needed.  Our Senior Companion Program volunteers also offer respite time for family caregivers. Senior Companions can come to your home, sit and visit with your elderly family member, allowing you a few hours a week to get out and run some errands or do something nice for yourself.  *Please note that this service is always dependent on the availability of volunteers in your city.

Other options: Catholic Charities has respite workers available for those who qualify. This is an income-based program. Call 757-456-2366 to request assistance.   For those who are family caregivers of an elderly individual living in a long-term care facility, you can apply for the Virginia Lifespan Respite Voucher Program through the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS).  It was created to provide reimbursement vouchers to home-based family caregivers for the cost of temporary, short-term respite care provided to their family members with disabilities (children and adults, including elderly persons).  Their contact number is 804-662-9340.

Some nursing homes and assisted living facilities offer temporary overnight respite care. Cost and options differ. You’ll need to contact the facilities individually to find out more. Senior Services’ resource specialists will be glad to give you a list of area nursing facilities who offer that option. Call our office at 757-461-9481 and ask to speak to a resource specialist.

*Senior Companion volunteers are always needed. To volunteer, you must be 55 years of age or more, have transportation and must pass a criminal background check as well as a wellness screening.  If you are interested, please click here for more information or to fill out a volunteer application or contact Kelley Russo, volunteer engagement specialist at 757-461-9481 to see if you qualify.
