Question: My father recently lost my mother and I am afraid he is lonely and not getting enough activity or mental stimulation. Are there any programs out there that can help him?
Response: There are a few programs in the community that focus on recreation for seniors. You may contact Parks and Recreation in your father’s city to see what programs they have available during the year. Many of them are free or at low cost. Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia also offers Senior Wellness Centers where seniors can socialize, interact, and even enjoy a light lunch with other seniors.
If a senior is home-bound, there are even options available to bring the fun to them! Senior Services offers a Volunteer Senior Companion Program that your father can take advantage of. He could even become a Senior Companion if he wishes! Contact Senior Services of Southeastern Virginia at (757) 461-9481 for more information.
