Medicare, Medicaid and Prescription Drug Assistance

Individuals who have Medicare, Medicaid or medical claims questions can call one of our volunteer Insurance Counselors for advice on everything from filing a claim, to comparing and understanding their coverage choices, to researching basic Medicaid information. This is a free, confidential service that can be conducted over the telephone or in person. To learn more about the services available to you, click on a topic below. Or call us at 757-461-9481.

  • Access To Benefits Coalition
In the fall 2004, Senior Services made news by launching the Access To Benefits Coalition, a partnership of 45 regional non-profit organizations dedicated to educating lower-income beneficiaries about the new Medicare prescription drug benefits. Through this program, Senior Services Insurance Counselors can enroll qualified people on-site for the medicines they need at the best discounts available.

No fee: This is a free service.

To schedule a meeting with an Insurance Counselor, call Senior Services at 757-461-9481.

  • Insurance Counseling (VICAP)
If you have Medicare, Medicaid or medical claims questions, Senior Services can help. Our trained, volunteer Insurance Counselors are part of the Virginia Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program, or VICAP. They can provide advice on everything from filing or resolving Medicare, Medicaid or other medical claims issues to exploring long-term care insurance needs. We are also in need of volunteers who can provide this valuable service.

No fee: This is a free service.

For information – or to register for one of our volunteer training sessions – call us at 757-222-4512.

  • Medicare Fraud Patrol
Through our Medicare Fraud Patrol, we can train you to spot waste and abuse in both Medicaid and Medicare programs – and to report fraud so seniors receive the reimbursements they deserve. The most prevalent problems are in the areas of home health, nursing homes and durable medical equipment, however abuses can be found anywhere a Medicare or Medicaid card is used.

No fee: This is a free service.

If you are interested in joining our Senior Medicare Fraud Patrol, call us at 757-461-9481.

  • Medicaid
If you are a senior who qualifies for Medicaid, we can screen and provide application assistance for you. Norfolk seniors can apply directly through The Center for Aging, Senior Services’ partnership with the Norfolk Department of Human Services. For more information, call us at 757-461-9481.

  • Prescription Drug Assistance
If you, or someone you know needs help paying for medicines, Senior Services can assist you. Our education staff will help you find the best discount drug programs available, whether you wish to enroll for Medicare Part D prescription drug benefits, or want to learn more about The Pharmacy Connection that helps qualified individuals receive free medicines from participating pharmaceutical companies. You may also be eligible for Medicare Part D “Extra Help” benefits.

We will screen you for all options when you call. In some cases, beneficiaries can use a combination of programs. Call or stop by our Norfolk headquarters Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

No fee: This is a free service.
