At Senior Services we are not only dedicated
to helping seniors – we are dedicated to those who care for
them. We offer a number of services and programs especially
for the caregiver. To find out more, click on any of the

757-461-9481. They can help you complete a Caregiver
Assessment form, so that you can begin receiving services.
Caregiver Assessment
As a first step in receiving any of the caregiving
services listed in this section, please call one of our Intake
Specialists at 757-461-9481. They will help you complete our
Caregiver Assessment form right over the phone. Before you call,
please make sure you have information about your loved one’s
primary care physician, annual income, services they are
current receiving (if any) and what type of help they need.
The assessment takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.
Soon after, one of our Care Coordinators will make an
appointment to visit you in your home to find out more about
your loved ones needs.

Caregiver Support Groups
Caregiving may be one of the most important roles you will
undertake in your lifetime. It is not always an easy role, nor
is it one for which most of us is prepared. Senior Services
can connect you with a number of community organizations that

Elder Abuse Prevention
If you suspect someone age 60 or older is being abused,
neglected or exploited, call your local Department of Social
Services. To schedule
an educational program, class or workshop on ways to identify
and prevent elder abuse, call Senior Services. We also work
directly with family members to identify risk factors, put
them in touch with available resources and suggest behavior
changes that can help. To reach the Elder Abuse hotline, call
1-800-766-8050, ext. 60.
No fee: This is a free service.

Home-delivered Meals
There’s nothing like a hot, delicious meal! Through our
Home-delivered Meals program, we deliver one mid-day meal per
day for seniors age 60 and over who are restricted to their
homes due to illness or disability. We also provide boxed
meals that you can put aside in the event of inclement weather
conditions or emergencies.
Fee: Routes and fees may vary.

Homemaker
If you need help around the house during a period of illness
or recovery, you can take advantage of our Homemaker Program.
We’ll connect you to a licensed professional who can help with
such tasks as light housekeeping or preparing a meal. This
service is available Monday through Friday.
Fee: The full cost is $11 per hour. You may pay less depending
on your income. The minimum fee is $20 a month.

Insurance Counseling
(VICAP)
If you have Medicare, Medicaid or medical
claims questions, Senior Services can help. Our trained,
volunteer Insurance Counselors are part of the Virginia
Insurance Counseling and Assistance Program, or VICAP. They
can provide advice on everything from filing or resolving
Medicare, Medicaid or other medical claims to exploring long-term care insurance needs. We are also in need of volunteers
who can provide this valuable service.

Legal Counseling
There are times when you may need the help of an attorney.
Through our partnership with the Senior Law Center, Senior
Services can help you with legal advice and representation by
an attorney (for all legal efforts except criminal and
fee-generating cases). We can address such issues as:

Our program also provides legal education presentations to

Personal Care
After an illness or during a period of convalescence, our
Personal Care Program can help you with hair care, bathing,
food preparation, feeding – and other self-care tasks. Our
Care Coordinators will assess your condition, help you develop
a care plan and arrange for the services through a licensed
home health agency. To be
eligible, you must be age 60 or older.
Fee: The full cost is $12 per hour. You may pay less depending
on your income. The minimum fee is $20 a month.

Prescription Drug Assistance
If you know of someone who needs help paying
for their medicines, Senior Services can help. Our education
staff will assist you in finding the best discount drug
programs available, whether you wish to enroll for Medicare
Part D prescription drug benefits or want to learn more
about The Pharmacy Connection that helps qualified
individuals receive free medicines from participating
pharmaceutical companies.
We will screen you for all options when you call. In some
cases, beneficiaries can use a combination of programs. Call
or stop by our Norfolk headquarters Monday through Friday;
from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Walk-ins are welcome.

Respite Care
One of the greatest challenges facing
caregivers is finding the time to care for themselves. When
you need a break from your care-giving duties, let us know. We
will provide you with a referral to a licensed Home Health
Care Agency, which will assess your needs for personal care or
companion services. Senior Services also coordinates a program
that provides overnight respite, for up to one week, for the
senior in a nursing home or assisted living facility. You
choose from a list of participating facilities.
Fee: Fees are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Senior Companion
Do you know of someone who needs a friend?
Senior Services administers a Senior Companion Program that
partners senior volunteers with homebound adults in need of
companionship and a helping hand. In addition to paying a
friendly visit, the companions often perform a variety of
tasks, such as shopping for groceries, writing a letter or
fixing a light meal. In some cases, the Senior Companion plays
a vital role in the life of their client, providing a
much-needed link from the community to that home.
No fee: This service is free to those who need
assistance.

Transportation
When you need a ride, give us a call. We
coordinate transportation for residents 60 and over with rides
to medical appointments, Nutrition Centers, Senior Centers,
Adult Day Care Centers and legal aid. There’s a limit to one
ride a week or four rides a month. If you need more frequent
transportation, let us know. Senior Services partners with
other local organizations that provide transportation as well.
Fee: We ask for a voluntary donation of $4 per trip.
